Skytrail is expanding its tree planting efforts across the border from Kenya into Tanzania, continuing the same restorative work with accelerated impact.

This next phase builds on the foundation laid in Kenya, where Skytrail has already committed 84,000 mangroves along East Africa’s coastlines through its partnership with veritree. The initiative helped protect vulnerable shorelines, support local fisheries, and create sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities – and this important work is now taking off across the border.

Mangroves and East Africa’s coastal resilience

Mangroves in Tanzania are vital to East Africa’s coastal resilience, supporting biodiversity, clean water access, and shoreline protection. Mangrove ecosystems help safeguard 70% of the world’s tropical coastlines and are home to species such as the African bush elephant, crane comb duck, and aardvark. The restoration work includes nine native mangrove species, including:

  • Rhizophora mucronata
  • Ceriops tagal
  • Avicennia marina

veritree’s data-driven approach ensures measurable impact through tools like:

  • Dendrometers
  • Soil sensors
  • Bioacoustic monitoring
  • Weather stations

This technology is deployed to monitor tree growth, soil health, and biodiversity, providing unparalleled transparency and keeping project progress on track.

High-impact, community-driven restoration in Tanzania

Each tree planted in Tanzania is estimated to sequester 0.31 tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime, with an 80% survivability rate. For large-volume planting, a four-month advance notice ensures nursery scalability and readiness.

Importantly, this is a community-led initiative, where 80% of nursery participants are women, and local communities are trained in restoration and monitoring techniques, supporting gender equity, job creation, and long-term stewardship.

“This next phase in Tanzania is a natural evolution of our impact journey with the same trusted partners and same proven approach, just with greater reach and agility,” says Neil Colney, Managing Director, Skytrail.

“We’re proud to continue supporting mangrove restoration in East Africa, and Skytrail expanding into Tanzania helps us to deepen our impact, while staying true to the communities and ecosystems we’ve built relationships with” adds Patty Yanes, Partnership Success Manager, veritree.
